Join the Club

My name is Whitney Chamberlain and I work under Leah Cox as the Program Manager for the California Task Force on Youth and Workplace Wellness. Leah, with her personal physical feats last year (stories which she will share with you on this blog), has inspired and convinced me to "walk the walk"--but much harder! Thus, I will be blogging periodically on my pursuit to train for and run a half marathon in May 2009.

Deciding to get out the door for a run is often the most difficult part for me. I need the inspiration of other motivated runners to fuel my legs--or, more accurately, my mind. While I love the idea of pounding pavement in solitude, after mile three I think, "I just can't do it." And let's face it, if I want to enjoy a margherita pizza in all of it's glorious aromas and calories, then I have to go the extra miles.

I have new friends to help me with this! I joined Folsom Roadrunners, a running club based in Folsom, CA, that only costs me $25 for a t-shirt and a network of people who are training to run. This group includes all levels of "runners"--beginners (even people who have never jogged), joggers wanting to complete a race (this is where I fit in) and multiple marathoners (ultimate inspiration yet a far cry at this point). I can also get tips from Folsom Roadrunner Coach Kristen.

How does it help motivate me? It's a network based online. I login, post a date and location for a run and hope other club members join me (in which case I have to be there and have to run) OR I can find a run posted by another member, write that I will join her and then I have to show up. It becomes a scheduled event to which I RSVP'd. After all, when I RSVP to Evite, I don't bail out!

I urge you all who struggle with making the time or getting out the door, to Join a Club! Check out http://www.folsomroadrunners.com/.
